Meal Replacements
What exactly is a meal replacement?

According to Health Canada, a meal replacement is a single food, which is able to replace one or more daily meals but not be a sole source of nourishment.

In addition to being regulated, a meal replacement is also a portion-controlled alternative meal. Other products are available on the market that may contain some protein, carbohydrates, fat and vitamins and minerals, however, only meal replacements contain sufficient nutrition to actually replace a meal.

Meal replacements come in the form of bars, powders to be mixed with milk or other liquid and ready-to-drink shakes. They are normally found in the pharmacy section of most stores, and come in an array of flavours.

Meal Replacements are useful for:
  • weight loss
  • weight maintenance
  • a quick, nutritional meal on the go

In general, any plan for weight loss or weight maintenance should emphasize a healthy lifestyle and a change in eating habits, and include physical fitness as part of that change. Keep in mind that a safe weight loss consists of 1-2 pounds per week.
